Are flip flops your go to footwear for summer? Are you a year-round lover of these sandals? Traditional flip flops are widely available and are typically flimsy, thin, and flat. Use of these sandals can leave you open to develop painful conditions like Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and more. Can we do better for our feet? Of course! Although in general Dr. Marc House at Kinetic Foot and Ankle Clinic recommends avoiding flip flops in lieu of more supportive shoes whenever possible, if you must wear them, we have recommendations for choosing a more ideal pair of flip flops. Your best bet is to opt for ones with supportive straps, arch support, and a thick rubber sole.
VIONIC
The Bella II and the Tide are styles accepted by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) for women and men, respectively, for promoting beneficial foot health. They have cushioning, arch support, and stability throughout zones of the footbed. Though the straps vary in thickness, they do have rubber soles.
CHACO
The Classic Flip from Chaco is available in women’s and men’s sizes and have a wide, supportive strap. The soles are made of a rubber compound, and the footbed also includes both cushion and arch support. These corrective footbeds are also accepted by the APMA.
FITFLOP
FitFlop’s offers the Surfa in women’s sizes and the Surfer in men’s sizes. Both these styles have a wide fit, supportive strap, and a shock-absorbing footbed.
