request an appointmentWhat is EPAT therapy?
EPAT stands for Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment and is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for patients with ligament and tendon problems. EPAT uses shockwaves to trigger the body’s natural healing responses in injured and inflamed tissues, stimulating the growth of new blood vessels and creating extra healing cells for tissue repair.
EPAT also helps to reduce pain by over-stimulating the nerves that transmit pain signals back to the central nervous system. EPAT treatments take around 10 minutes per session, and patients typically receive three treatments at weekly intervals.
What are PRP injections?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a treatment that utilizes the patient’s own blood. PRP is rich in growth factors and other bioactive proteins that aid in tissue repair and regeneration. The procedure involves extracting a small amount of blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting the PRP into the injured or inflamed tissues.
What conditions are EPAT therapy and PRP injections used for?
Soft tissue injuries show good results following EPAT and PRP treatments, and they can be used to aid healing in:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Peroneal tendonitis
- Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints)
- Sesamoiditis
- Posterior tibial tendonitis
- Achilles tendonitis
Our surgeons have specialized expertise in using EPAT therapy and PRP injections to treat patients with plantar fasciitis and peroneal tendonitis.
Are EPAT therapy and PRP injections safe?
Both treatments have passed rigorous trials and extensive safety tests, and there’s no evidence that they’ve caused any serious side effects in patients who’ve had treatment.
Both EPAT therapy and PRP injections offer effective alternatives to surgery, avoiding the possible risks associated with invasive procedures. Our surgeons recommend that you stay away from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for two weeks before treatment and six weeks after, to ensure you achieve the optimal results.
What do EPAT therapy and PRP treatments feel like?
Both procedures cause minimal discomfort, with many patients reporting that they felt no unpleasant sensations at all. As they are both minimally invasive procedures, you should be able to carry on with your day as normal afterward.
